The interview:

What was your upbringing like?
"We were really poor. We lived out near the woods. My dad worked in agriculture so he used to grow all our food. Christmas was tough, we had to decorate a pole with rocks,and pine cones... Just kidding about the last part."

Do you have any siblings?
"I have two brothers and an older sister. I'm the second in the pecking order. My brother Smith is our tour manager and my youngest brother is 10 and likes techno music."

So does he see you as an embarrassment?
"He's pretty stoked actually. When he was a baby he'd come to our shows and he tried to dive off the balcony into the pit when he was two or something. (laughs)"

You're 32, right? You don't look it.
"I've probably kept my boyish good looks because I don't live in the 'real world'. I went from school right to college and from college to a band. I go back home and see guys I used to go school with who are now married and have three kids. They're real men. I still don't feel like I'm a real man, I guess I'm more of an elf."

AFI have a pretty androgynous image, do you ever get hit on by male fans?
"Not really, but when people see me from behind they often think I'm a girl. And whenever I get junk mail delivered to my house it's usually adressed to Miss or Mrs. Jade Puget. There's also a lot of fan fiction on the internet about Davey [Havok, vocals] and I being gay together. They call it 'Javey', which is like 'Jade' and 'Davey', and they do a lot of erotic art featuring him and I in a lot of compromising positions. It's kinda funny, but also really disturbing."

How were you as a teenager? Awkward and introverted?
"No, I was quite lucky because I skated and liked punk rock so all the skater girls liked me. Back in the 80's there weren't many hot girls who were into punk rock and skating. All the really hot girls were either jock girls or preppies."

What was school like for you?
"Until I discovered punk rock I did really well at school. I was the top of my class. Then I discovered punk and as soon as I got my driver's license I was out of there. I was done. As soon as I turned 16 I took my proficiency, which is a diploma that allows you to get out of high school early, and then I went straight to college."

When did you start learning to play guitar?
"I was off sick from school for a few months when I was 14, 15, so I picked up the guitar and started to play then. I had mono - AKA glandular fever or the kissing disease."

Ah, was that from fooling around with cute punk rock girls?
"No, it was a total freak accident. My friend, who didn't know he had mono at the time, was screwing around and he spat an unpopped popcorn kernel at me and it went in my mouth. It was a perfect shot. Although it's
not like I had my mouth open waiting for him to spit this thing 10 feet across the room and into my mouth."

You're losing your cool rep as a ladies' man here Jade...
"Well, you know I was nailing tons of chicks at the time so it could have been that too...By the way, how many girls do you class as tons?
