PostSubject: The Dirge of Aercael    Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:43 pm

Tragoan knelt on the floor, his stick of chalk scraping against the cold stone of the ground. Below him, where he had been drawing, the final stages of his grand work were becoming complete. He connected the last ring of the circle and stood, looking down at his masterpiece. "Finally... Deification!" He shouted. The dream he had possessed was finally blooming into fruition; he was going to be a god. He sighed in relief, and triumph before sitting in the middle of the circle. He sat still, in a state of meditation before he began to chant in a nearly unpronounceable tongue, swaying slightly. He ended the chant sharply, and everything stilled for a moment; the fire didn't flicker, insects in the room seemed to float without flapping their wings, and Tragoan didn't breathe. Suddenly, the fire, the shadows, the air and dust began to swirl around in the room, covering Tragoan completely. His screams could be heard throughout the city's ward, shrill in the air.

Two jet black eyes stared down at clawed hands, and another, primal, animalistic shriek was heard. Tragoan's head shot up as his door opened, and another scream shot through the air; this one, of a woman. Tragoan shot forward, his gaping maw filled with needle like teeth as he pinned her against the wall. Wisps of a brown, dust-like vapor swirled around him as he watched the woman. Her skin began to turn brown, and boils and lesions formed, spikes and tentacles sprouting from her infected flesh.

A Month Later

"We have received no word from Ransin for a month now, Sir. The gates haven't opened." The commanding knight said to Acharn as he looked at the city's closed gates. Acharn was the hero of the united human kingdoms of Danrel, the human nation. He was a demigod, the son of a human mother and a god father. He was invincible. "If they won't come out, then we will have to break in." He said. Within an hour, the battering ram had began to pound on the cities gates. Acharn stood at the head of the ram, to stride into the city when it was opened. Finally, the gates gave way; the board holding them shut finally shattered. Using his immense strength, Acharn pushed the gates open with a creak. What he beheld, was monstrosity. A figure knelt over a corpse, picking the flesh from it's ribs. When the gates opened, the figure turned and shrieked. It had spikes protruding from it's body and numerous boils and lesions. The creature ran at Acharn, arms extended, and mouth open. And so it began.

The Dirge, as it came to be called, spread throughout the nation quickly. Within two weeks the capital of the nation gathered a band of it's knights and a small fraction of it's royalty and sent them, to gather help from the other races and nations on the land.

The "Accepted" Races
Human- The Human's were one of the strongest races, possessing a large kingdom and population in their land of Danrel. Though, when the Dirge brought itself upon the world, it was the first to fall. Humans are a a rather trustworthy race, though they suffer from bouts of selfishness.
Elf- The Elven race is of Lisatael, by all means, the most proficient with magic. The Fae are the only ones above them, though the Fae keep to themselves, giving the Elves their reputation. Their immense and intricate cities were build using the arcane arts. Elves are rather inept when it comes to physical activity, though, much preferring to use their magic. Elves are the longest-lived race, and also one of the two that originally inhabited the world. They think more highly of themselves than they do other races. All Elves are pale, beautiful creatures with slightly pointed ears and a stature just below that of man. Their society is Matriarchal. They are a rather secretive race, and their history has much that is concealed. Elves are selfish, arrogant, scheming and dastardly. Their ego's usually outweigh any other facet of their personality, and they have little respect for anyone other than themselves and other elves. They harbor a deep animosity with the Naga, though other races often hold them in contempt. Most don't trust elves, and their kingdom often sends spies into other nations. The elves aren't really much for religion, and all of their temples seem to be dedicated to harnessing arcane energies. Their capital houses the Azure Spire, home of the Elven Archmage and where every great elven mage goes to train.
Dwarf- Dwarves are a race of short and stocky people hailing from Stonegate, the men sporting large beards and the woman long hair. The Dwarves are master smiths and metal workers. Their nation lies within the mountains, in various underground cities and tunnels. Their capital city is built into the largest landmark on the continent, a volcano, and is called Bronzethrone. The Dwarves are also a race that has lived since nearly the beginning of the world. Dwarves love to hold great feasts and banquets, which usually end with the entire attendance passed-out from intoxication; dwarves are known also for their particularly strong ales. The dwarves do not seem to concern themselves much over religion, and are content to smithing their wondrous crafts.
Guado- The Guado are a curious race, hailing from the forests of Menost. They have lithe and graceful bodies. They have tufts of hair growing from their elbows and the ends of their long, catlike ears. Their hair is thick, much like a mane and a line of it extends in a narrow strip down their back to their tail, which is much like a horses. They also have pupils like a snakes, and have claws on their hands and feet and fangs. They are excellent when crafting things from wood or similar natural materials. They are rather scornful towards humans, seeing as mankind has leveled many of their forests, and a now-resolved war had broken out over this not long ago. Their society is a number of primitive nomadic clans that inhabit the forest. Their combat tactics employ guerrilla warfare, and nearly every guado is a master of the bow and arrow. Their religion hinders them from refining nature in any way, so they eat their foods raw and have no metal tools. They use wood and stone to make their armors, housing, and weapons. The race is the most in-touch with nature, and they believe their deity inhabits every guado, and every part of unrefined nature. They worship their chief deity, Esavana, the sylvans, a patron animal of every species, and their ancestors. Their society seems rather primitive, and the guado have universally earned the mindset of being "Blissfully Ignorant" of most of the world's happenings outside their forests. Guado, contrary to popular belief, are very peaceful, and will only harm something if it harms their forests.
Orc- The Orcish horde is a schismatic nation of brutes which reside in Ordanda. Orcs are large, muscular, and built for warfare. They have tusks on their lower jaw, and have green skin. Their nation is composed of numerous post-tribal warring clans. Their ruling is simple; the strongest rules until a stronger Orc challenges. Their religion is primarily shamanic and animistic. The orcs are a rather simple race to understand; they fight, and they are content doing it.
Tri'Manni- The Tri'Mannih are a race of jungle-dwelling folk, living in the rain forests of Bykia. Their skin tone ranges from blue to green, and their faces are very slightly elongated. They have a long, prehensile tail and very thin bodies, with cat-like claws and horns pointing backwards. Their culture is tribal. They have large cities built in the treetops. Their religion focuses on a village's "Witch Doctor" dictating most religious themes and rituals. They are vastly territorial, and aren't fond of those that trespass into their jungles. They have no contact with the other races, excluding chance meetings with the Guado.
The Undead- The Undead are a large conglomeration of various other races' former members, cursed to walk the earth for eternity in their lands of Necrostatuos. Undead come into being for various reasons, be it Tri'Manih voodoo or another Undead turning it. Their society has a strict caste system. There are various sub-races of Undead. They reside in the ruins of a long lost civilization's capital city, or more correctly the tunnels, catacombs and reservoirs beneath it, known as Mausoleum. Undead are generally distrusted, and when usually found outside of their nation they're often put to death, unless they guise themselves as mortal. Their society has one revenant king, who rules over the entire race. The racial caste is as follows: Revenant>Vampires>Liches>Wights/Banshees(Male and female variants)>Ethereal Beings(Ghosts, Phantasms, etc.)>Zombies/Skeletons(The latter is the same as the former, just to a higher degree of decomposition).
Buamach- The Buamach are a race of lizard-men that dwell in the swamplands of Moeras. They have scales, elongated faces, sharp teeth, claws, a tail. and oddly gills. Their cities and towns usually stand half above the water on stilts, with walkways leading down into other, submerged areas. The buamach are an unusually friendly race, despite their rather fierce appearance. Their scales bare numerous bright colors that dull with age. Their society seems to be based off of trading, though in times of strife their physique make them peak warriors.
Naga- The Naga are a race hailing from the oceans, beaches and marshes of Nexis. Their bodies are human from the waist up and snake from the waist up, the upper half showing various snake-like attributes depending on the individual. Legend has it that they are somehow linked to the Elves, who they hold in contempt and view as below them, though their general thought is that they are above the other races. They are highly proficient with magic, and could easily usurp the elves' place as mages, though only the women of the race practice magic, making that very unlikely. Female Naga use magic exclusively while males fight physically. The women of the race are beautiful and lithe while the men are heavily muscled. Their capital city lies under the seas, where their queen sits atop her throne. They are matriarchal. The naga have the general superior attitude that the elves have, but to a higher degree. They were the only race that refused to ally themselves with the other races (Aside from the Tri'Manni, who were just unaware of the situation), and think themselves superior over all other forms of life.

The "Lesser" Races
Sylvan- People of the trees; Sylvans are carefree spirits of nature, and are worshiped by the Guado.
Demon- Loose spirits that often make deals with mortals.
Minotaur- Bull people that live on the plains.
Centaur- Half Horse, Half Man. Revered as a favored race by the Guado.
Satyr- Satyrs are crafty and devious creatures of the forest, with the legs of a goat, horns of a gazelle, tail of a devil, and talons of a bird growing from their fingers.
Fae- The Fae are a race of very small humanoids (Roughly knee high on a human) with beautiful translucent wings. They surpass even the Elves in their magic ability, but keep mostly to themselves.
Werewolf- Werewolves were formerly a scourge of the world, their virulent curse turning all their victims into Werewolves. But, in recent years, their blood has run thin and their curse is no longer spread, breeding now being the only way more of their kind come about. They have been hunted to near extinction for their primal nature. They hold a makeshift society in the forests.
Goblin- Goblins are a primitive race of loosely connected tribes under near constant squabbles amongst each other. They are around waist height and have green skin, looking much like small, lanky Orcs. They are rather easy to manipulate and as such they are often used as pawns. They usually make their homes in caves or ruins, or similar places.
Merfolk- The Merfolk are a mysterious race of underwater humanoids. They rarely venture onto land, and are very protective of their seas. Not much is known of their culture.
Dragon- Enormous reptilian beasts with nearly limitless power.
God- Various gods exist in the world, using their near-limitless power to do as they please, though they rarely interfere with mortal affairs.

The Schools of Magic

Holy- Holy magic let's the user imbue healing and beneficial blessings upon the caster and others. Practiced mostly by the Clergy.
Conjuration- Conjuration allows the caster to summon weapons and minions from other realms, and the branch of Necromancy allows the caster to reanimate the dead.
Alteration- This school allows one to alter the physical world; be it walking on water, breathing in water, opening locks, or creating barriers.
Arcane- The arcane magics are the most widely practiced. They deal with casting offensive spells, such as throwing a bolt of energy at an enemy, or defensive spells such as erecting a shield. This school of magic harnesses the might of fire, frost, and lightning to deal its damage.
Psionics- Psionics governs the abilities of the mind, be it psychokinesis, telepathy, clairvoyance, or scrying.
Alchemy- Alchemists possess the ability to break down and separate, or recreate substances to some extent, transmuting numerous materials. Alchemists also produce numerous elixirs and poisons.
Affliction- Affliction, also known as unholy magic, is a forbidden school which specializes in cursing others and spreading diseases and poisons.
Voodoo- Voodoo is the only magic practiced by the Tri'Manni, and is exclusive to them. This school seems to combine the schools of Holy Affliction and Necromancy and even some unique spells. It is used to curse others and spread disease, summon spirits of their ancestors and others, reanimate zombies, and even heal others to some extent.
Vis- Vis, practiced only by the Guado druids, is a school of magic that gives one control over Nature. With it, the guado can control plants, commune with animals, control water and earth, and manipulate the primal energies of the world.

Profiles

Tragoan. The Malefactor
Age: 85
Gender: Male
Race: Dirge Source
Bio: Tragoan was once an old mage who had always hoped to achieve apotheosis, or transcendence to becoming a god. He believed that he had found the key. Though, what Tragoan unleashed upon himself and the world was something of great evil; a virulent, mutating plague that twisted the mind and bodies of all afflicted. He now, stricken with the blight of the Dirge, wishes to dominate and infect the world.

Acharn, The Dread Knight
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Race: Dirgespawn
Bio: Acharn came into being when one of the gods grew lustful over the king of the humans' wife, finding her beauty amazing for her kind. The god raped the queen, though she told no one out of shame. Soon after, though, it was found that she was pregnant; the king welcomed the thought of a child, thinking it was his own. Though, when the child was born, it could clearly be told that it was not entirely human. The child was to be killed by the kings order, but when the sword to behead the child was swung, the blade shattered in two when it hit the infant's neck. The entirety of the kingdom was amazed and in awe, and out of threat of rebellion, the king let the child live, and later in it's life knighted it. Out of spite, the king made sure that Acharn was the first in his armies front lines, but he was never defeated. Though, this finally came back to the king when Acharn was assimilated into the Dirge, becoming the general of Tragoan's legions.

Sylrah
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Race: Guado
Bio: Sylrah is the oldest of the children in her tribe, and as such, is more than used to dealing with young children hanging around and has tremendous patience. As part of her 'right of passage' into the tribe, she has to go out and prove she is an adult.

Isolde of Blackrain
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Bio: Isolde fought her way from page to knight, leaving a simple, humble farm to try and make her place in the world. She is fiercely independent and will not tolerate being put down because of her gender. She is a fierce fighter, a loyal friend, and a merciless enemy.

Sambel Warverden
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Bio: Sambel was born in the Capital city of Danrel though his mother died in birth. He had no father, being a bastard child, and was given up to the Church. He lived his life as an orphan, though in his early years he showed a natural affinity for fighting. He was soon enlisted by the church into training to become a Paladin, learning basic Holy magic and advanced fighting skills.

Name: Jason Amaroq
Age: 70; Looks To Be In His Late Teens
Race: Elf
Bio: Like most elves, Jason has a gift for magic, learning bits from several schools of magic. Unlike most elves, he can also wield swords. Although still physically weaker than most races, he makes up for that lack of strength with sheer speed and tactical know-how. He loves nothing more than finding an opponent's weakness and exploiting it. However, he still prefers to use magic when possible. Not long after word of the Dirge reached his area, he set out to find a way to combat it. Although much about him is plain to see, he still holds many secrets, some that many would not expect.

Name:Lord Duskhand
Age:Forgotten
Race:Forgotten
Bio:This Necromancer has roamed this world for ages. All those who knew of him in life are now long gone, ether killed by time or the blade. His army of the dead had swept across the land until a united force of all races broke his power and shattered his will. He barley escaped with his life, if you could call it that. Now with the world in jeopardy, he has stepped from the shadows with a lone disciple to aid him in his quest for redemption or for revenge. He has yet to decide for himself. Though his power was broken he grows stronger as the death escalates.

Name:Naomi Narchuil
Age:180
Race:Corrupt Elf
Bio:Naomi found the hiding spot of Lord Duskhand long ago. She was bewitched by promises of power and glory. She soon fell completely under his sway. She proved to be a powerful asset to her master through her mastery of the Arcane magics. She serves him with out question, however she longs to return to being free of him and hopes to redeem the both of them. If they are redeemed Lord Duskhand will finally rest in peace, and Naomi will be able to return to her people.

Shasis Tyraear
Age: 37
Gender: Female
Race: Naga
Bio: Warrior of the Naga, head of the Queen's royal battalion. Shasis is stern and arrogant, and very much ethnocentric.

Name: Desu
Age: Unknown
Race: Demon
Bio: Desu is Demon. Or Spirit. He isn't tied to any one thing, a great tree or river. No, he is a loose spirit. And he enjoys the freedom that that entails. He wanders the world causing general mischief. Being a spirit he can change shape and cast magic.

Sambel sat on a log on the edge of the campfire, slouched slightly. His face showed a rather downtrodden expression, and he had good reason for it. His kingdom had been usurped in a matter of weeks, and there was nothing he could have doe to stop it. He sighed as he looked up and around at the camp. There were just over twenty people, a few soldiers, diplomats, and what remained of the royal family.

A knight rode into the camp on a gray horse. It stopped by the fire, dismounted and stood before Sambel a while, not speaking. The knight's helmet covered their face. He held out his hand, the blood-soaked coat of the ambassador from Lisatael in his hand. Had been killed in the skirmish on the way out of the city.

"His own pride was his downfall. He wouldn't come with myself or our men when we tried to get him to safety." The knight spoke. The voice was muffled slightly by the helmet.

Sambel nodded slightly and took the coat. "The elves are going to be disappointed. If we ever make it to Lisatael, that is." He said with a sigh.
